Desirable Destinations (2002-2003) is a project in which I gave blank postcards to participants and asked them to draw a desired sight or destination they had never seen. I left the instructions purposely ambiguous; I asked participants for a 'sight or destination', and one that 'they had never visited, but would like to see'. This allowed room for a broader definition of what constitutes a sight/destination, and even elicited responses that were imaginary. By asking participants to draw the destination (rather than write it in words), I wanted to gain insight into the sources of the images in their memory (echoes of travel posters, picture books, etc.) I am interested in how the destinations are visualized, as I believe that is directly linked to why the places are desired. The returned postcards are included in an archive that is displayed in various formats. Thank you to all who participated in this project. |
